Forest Bathing: What It Is and How It Improves Mental and Physical Health

Immersing yourself in nature offers unique benefits for both mind and body. One of the most effective and fascinating practices to achieve this deep connection is forest bathing, an experience that draws us closer to the natural environment and awakens our senses.
What Is Forest Bathing?
The Japanese term Shinrin Yoku translates into English as "forest bathing." This practice, which originated in Japan during the 1980s, invites us to spend time immersed in nature, reawakening our senses and fostering a profound connection with the surrounding environment. Supported by a government programme of forest medicine and numerous scientific studies, forest bathing has been shown to have positive effects on both physical and mental wellbeing.
What Forest Bathing Is NOT
It is essential to clarify that forest bathing is not simply a walk or a hike. It is a mindful and guided experience that stimulates biological, neurological, and psychological changes in the body. During these sessions, a professional guide helps participants fully immerse themselves in the beauty of nature. While it is possible to practise forest bathing independently after learning the basic techniques, expert guidance often enhances the benefits.
The Benefits of Forest Bathing
Numerous studies have confirmed the advantages of forest bathing for our health:
- Physical benefits: Boosts the immune system by increasing the activity of natural killer cells, which are crucial in fighting infections and tumours.
- Improved mood: Reduces anxiety, depression, and stress, while enhancing vitality and overall wellbeing.
- Stress reduction: Lowers cortisol and adrenaline levels, activating the parasympathetic nervous system responsible for relaxation and regeneration.
- Better sleep quality: Promotes deeper, more restorative sleep.
- Support for rehabilitative medicine: Recent studies from 2023 highlight how forest bathing can have positive effects in rehabilitative medicine.
How to Practise Forest Bathing
Forest bathing is accessible to everyone and can last from a few hours to several days. Activities include slow, meditative walks, sensory engagement, and moments of silence, allowing participants to immerse themselves in self-reflection and the surrounding nature. During these sessions, you will have the opportunity to practise outdoor mindfulness, journaling, and (in my sessions) artistic expression, fostering a deep connection with the environment.
Where to Practise Forest Bathing
You can practise forest bathing in any nearby woodland; the cleaner and more pristine the location, the greater the beneficial effects. The Apennines in Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna offer numerous trails and tranquil forests, just a short distance from urban areas. However, don’t forget that nature can also be found in urban spaces! Parks and peri-urban areas can be ideal places to reconnect with the environment. As demonstrated by Qing Li, a global expert in this field, forest bathing in urban settings also provides significant health benefits.
